Jaw Reduction / Masseter (Botox®) Treatment

What is Jaw Reduction Treatment?th-1

Also known as Masseter Treatment, Jaw Reduction (Botox®) Treatment is a non-surgical technique to reduce a square jaw line to create a more oval, softer face shape using botox injections.  Grinding of the teeth at night or excessive chewing of gum causes over-activity of the masseter (chewing) muscle which in some cases can cause muscles to become enlarged, making the jaw appear wide and square.

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by the botulinum bacterium. Botox® is a protein derivative of the toxin, which, when injected into the muscle, causes it to become weakened or inactivated. It stops the muscle from functioning by blocking chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle.

The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes. Botox is injected into the enlarged muscle using a fine short needle.  The muscle is weakened and will reduce in size creating a softer rounded appearance of the jaw line.  Post treatment, the area may have some slight redness and swelling, which normally resolves within two hours.  The treatment normally starts to take effect after 4 to 14 days, but this may vary slightly with some individuals.  Some patients require a second appointment after 12 weeks and following this the full effects will normally last between 3 to 4 months.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects of this treatment are rare. Most people find that the injection causes only mild discomfort. Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling, which usually subsides in 48 hours.  In extremely rare cases patients have developed an allergy to the treatment, while others have shown resistance, i.e. it causes little or no effect on the treated muscles. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, treatment is not recommended.
