What is Lumigan/Latisse eyelash growth treatment?

Latisse is a prescription only product. Latisse received FDA approval in the states for hypotrichosis – treatment of thin eyelashes. It is the brand name for a drug called bimatoprost and is available in the UK under the brand name Lumigan.

Does it work?

Trials over 13 years and over 5000 patients have shown that Lumigan is safe and that 100% of patients treated will see an improvement in their eyelash quality.

Application

The recommended dosage is one application nightly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes only. Once nightly, start by ensuring your face is clean, make-up and contact lenses are removed.
Holding the applicator horizontally, place one drop of Lumigan on the area of the applicator closest to the tip, but not on the tip. Immediately draw the applicator carefully across the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes (where the eyelashes meet the skin) going from the inner part of your lash line to the outer part. Blot any excess solution beyond the eyelid margin.

How long do I use it for?

You will start to see results from 8 weeks. Maximum results are achieved after 16 weeks. A maintenance dose of every other night is recommended after 12 weeks. Please note, each bottle purchased lasts approximately 4 – 6 weeks.

Potential side effects

The most common side effect is an itching sensation. Other less common side effects include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes and redness of the eyelids. Any eyelid skin darkening is expected to reverse after several weeks to months. Any darkening of the coloured part of the eye known as the iris is NOT expected to reverse and it is likely to be permanent. In clinical trials of Lumigan at this strength only 1 patient had very minor changes in iris pigmentation out of approximately 2000 patients.

What happens if I stop using Lumigan?

If the product is stopped, the effect will start to drop off after 2 months.
